A teenage girl named Yuko who, after being bullied at school, becomes increasingly rebellious—skipping classes, using inhalants, and joining a gang. Her behavior causes a deep rift within her family, leading to a prolonged struggle by her parents, school officials, and authorities to bring her back on track. The story follows the breakdown of family dynamics over 200 days as they try to cope with her escalating delinquency.
The film is adapted from a bestselling autobiographical novel by Hiroshi Hayashi, a Japanese TV writer, who documented his real-life struggle with his daughter’s delinquency. The book caused a national stir upon release.
The story was so influential that it was adapted not only into this 1983 film directed by Kōsei Saitō, but also into several TV dramas in later years, including a popular 2005 remake.
Tragically, Hiroshi Hayashi’s daughter, on whom the story is based, passed away in her early twenties, adding further poignancy to the already emotional narrative.
