Set amid the ruins of post–Korean War Seoul, the film follows a young man who travels from the countryside in search of his older brother, only to find him entangled in a dangerous love affair with a prostitute surviving off U.S. army camps. As desperation, jealousy, and crime intertwine, the brothers become caught in a tragic struggle between loyalty, desire, and the moral decay of a war-torn city.
The film was shot on location in the ruins of 1950s Seoul, capturing the harsh reality of life after the Korean War.
Director Shin Sang-ok blended Italian neorealism with dark, noir-style storytelling, creating one of the most visually daring Korean films of its era.
Actress Choi Eun-hee, Shin’s wife and muse, played one of the first complex and morally conflicted female characters in Korean cinema.
The film subtly critiques the growing American influence on Korean society through its setting near U.S. army bases and black-market scenes.
Decades later, Shin and Choi’s shocking abduction by North Korea in 1978 turned their story into one of cinema’s most dramatic real-life sagas.
